Mexican Mezcal sold in 27 countries of three continents

With the support of the Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentación, SAGARPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Nourishment), Mexican mezcal producers will carry out their first consolidated export tothe United States market, said sale will bring in an income of  3.1 million pesos from its first shipment.

MezcalThe Integradora Comercial de Ejutla (the Ejutla Commercial Integrated Company), representing over 15 commercial brands,  signed an export contract with the comapny MEX-CAL Inc., a California USA based comany dedicated to importing spirits. Two hundred mezcal producing families with the brands Forever Oaxaca, Felino, Real de Jalpa and Guerrero, will benefit from said contract. Soon contracts by the same brands will be signed with the Chinese market.

Mexicano mezcal is considered a drink among the categories Premium and Superpremium, which the international and mainly the United States market values and appreciates.

With the joint ipation of maguey and mezcal producers as well as bottlers, along with government authorities, the modernization and fitting of 131 mezcal factories, as well as 13 homogenizing and bottling plants has been achieved. Four inulin and syrup plants have ben built, benefitting three thousand producing families.

Thanks to these works and the efforts towards maintaining the National Mezcal Quality Certification Program in the seven states with in the origin domain, the mexican mezcal exports were sent to 27 countries in three continents.

Mezcal is a drink with a denomination of origin, comprising the territories protected by the states of Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Oaxaca, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas. Mexico has 200 different agave species. With 30 of these is the drink known as mezcal produced.

MezcalData from the Consejo Mexicano Regulador de la Calidad del Mezcal (Mexican Mezcal Quality  Regulatory Council) indicate that Mexico has 330,000 Hectares being exploited, these belong to  9,000 producers. This activity generates 29,000 direct and indirect jobs.

National certified mezcal production is higher that two million liters, out of which, 434,000 are exported. In 2008, exports generated an income of 21 million dollars, four million above the established target.

For 2009, income from mezcal exports is estimated to reach 23 million dollars. Exports are also expected to increase 200 percent, while domestic sales are expected to increaseat least 10 percent to total 290,000 annual liters.

During the last four years, the federal, state and municipal governments have dedicated resources in the amount of 400 million pesos in support of the para Sistema Producto Maguey Mezcal (Maguey Product Mezcal System).
