Mexico maintains positive
numbers despite international environment

Secretaría de Turismo Ciudad de México – December 2008.

Mexican tourism continues to hold up as a source of currency and social and economic development, with a sustained annual growth of 5 to 7%, as highlighted by the federal government’s tourism minister Rodolfo Elizondo Torres.

TurismoWithin the frame of his appearance before the Tourism Commission of the House of Representatives, the head of SECTUR confirmed that even though the world-wide economic panorama faces a tough forecast for the next months; by August tourism activities registered a growth of 7% in currency generation as recorded by the Banco de México.

In this order of ideas he stated that tourism may contribute to soften some of the imbalances that are happening in the financial sector and in some economic branches. Strategies are being aligned by the federal government through its Tourism Ministry, the Mexican Tourism Promotion Council (CPTM) and the National Tourism Fund (FONATUR) to wrestle with the economic challenges the country may face.

“We are certainly not living through normal times and we must be as alert as ever because of it, we are working towards reestablishing the strategies and initiatives of this sector in a way that we can maximize investment and tourism flows under the conditions generated by the new environment”, he pointed out.

Turismo Among these actions he highlighted the central theme which is the promotion of our destinations, that is why the campaign and marketing strategies are being redesigned and redirected focusing on the United States and Canada, countries that represent 85 percent of our international market, their currencies have a greater value versus the peso and they maintain an important flow of tourists towards our destinations.

“I find it timely to comment to you that Mexico is among the list of countries benefitting, for the time being, from a rate of exchange that is very attractive to international tourists”, he underlined.

That is why, he added, new segments with a special potential must be identified within the context we live in, such as medical treatment tourism, and to continue strengthening successful products like Sun & Beach and others that have been evolving satisfactorily like cultural, business and nature tourism.
