The details of certain places are what make cities familiar to us and if we neglect to visit those places, it's as if we'd never been there. Set against a backdrop of sun-drenched, mountains, Monterrey es a city of details and textures, captured in the facades of the houses in the historic part of town and the many sculptures that adorn the public walkways, like Juan Soprano's famous "Paloma" at the entrance to the modern Art Museum. The velvet textures of the Sierra Madre, the Cerro de Santa Catarina or the very regal have brought them back for second helpings.

After a hard day's business, we recommend you treat yourself to a banquet fit for a king. El Regio is a restaurant that serves typical regional food and that has been graced by the presence of Mexico 's last four presidents. Forget about dieting for a while and whet your appetite with El Regio´s special entrée: beans with "poison" a pork dish drowned in a spicy-pepper sauce. The serving are huge, so we recommend you order two cuts to share, the Rib-eye steak or the Cabrito al Pastor a barbecued goat dish. And to accompany your meal, way we suggest an excel Rioja or beer, the Monterrey classic being Carta Blanca. It's hot at this time of year and a hearty meal may you feeling a little lethargic, so take a nap and prepare yourself for the city's night life.

Monterrey offers all the attractions of major capital cities worldwide. Several restaurant bars and lounges have been opened recently that measure up to the fashionable nightspots of London or New York . One of these is Genome, restaurant-bar that resembles an enormous swimming pool. The walls are covered in small tiles in different tones of blue and the atmosphere is relaxed., with ambient and New York lounge music, intererspersed with a touch of bossanova, this is the perfect spot to eat, talk and enjoy a few drinks. The comfortable turquoise chairs and retro tables give the bar fifties feel. The menu international, with a distinct oriental flavor.

Saturday is the best day to take a trip outside Monterrey . The chipinque ecological park is just a 20-minute drive from the city center. This is where the locals come to jog or ride their bikes or simply take in the majestic view of the Sierra Madre Oriental . The mountain view can be best appreciated while enjoying breakfast at the Mirador restaurant fo the Chipinque hotel, which is perched virtually on the summit. We recommend you rent a car the day or hire a taxicab to take you there and back.

In you have an adventours spirit, you can continue your journey along the Carretera Nacional to Presa de la Boca, a dam just 30 minutes from Chipinque. Presa de la Boca es located in the lower part of Santiago , a colonial village small enough to visit on foot. At the secret bay. Don't forget to bring a swimsuit: it's forbidden to swim at the dam, but you can take a dip the middle.

For lunch, we recommend the Playa Azul restaurant. Which has a delicious selections of seafood, frog's legs and filet of fish in batter.

AN AFTERNOON OF SHOPPING OR AN AFTERNOON OF TRADIION?

When you get from your morning's activities, the first thing you'll want is a refreshing shower. To white away the afternoon, we have two suggestions: a walk around the historic part of town , or shopping.

The buildings of downtown Monterrey -the part of the city known as the Barrio Antiguo- date from the 17 th century. The antiques stores that line its cobbled streets are to be found behind the cathedral and the Modern Art Museum (MARCO). The ZUNO record store boats an extensive catalogue of the latest electronic music. If it's a good cup of coffee or beer you're looking for, try the Café Paraiso.

Should you opt to spend the afternoon shopping, there are two places you simply must visit. The first of these is Plaza Fiesta San Agustin, where you will all the top-of the ranger clothes stores and Kenneth Cole's extravagant , ultra sophisticated boutique. The other store we highly recommend is La Bodega, owned by Maurisio Jasso. This a warehouse-style outlet selling practically everything from lamps and, boxes, to jewelry, rugs and photo frames, all imported from exotic places like the Philippines, Thailand, India and Eastern Europe.

Dinner at Luisiana could well herald the beginning of a passionate love affair with Monterrey . Decorated an the Neoclassical style, with a fountain featuring a sculpture of a semi-clad vestal virgin, this restaurant is a city landmark, not to mention one of the best providers of the haute cuisine Monterrey has to offer. During its 52 year history, Luisina has wined and dined society's elite. Here you can rub shoulders with some of the wealthiest men in Monterrey . to eat, we recommend the Cazuela Costa Brava. A seafood paella, or the Duck in Orange Sauce. To finish off the nigh with style, try Louisiana 's famous oven baked ice cream.
